Rotman Trip

Libra’s Take Over Rotman? Steps Moving Forward??

Libras Inc. takes Rotman School of Business - what a way to start off the first day of December huh?

The trip to Rotman was a very insightful one, one that we can say impacted us in more than one beneficial ways. To our dismay, we had to meet very early, but in the end, it was worth it - we took away so much more than we could’ve ever imagined. As Calvin said, PERSEVERE!

The first half of the morning we spent with Nogah Kornberg, who is an integrative thinker who works very closely with our teacher Ms. Essabhai. First, all three groups went on their journey with Nogah and vaguely went over our tensions in order to get some insight, feedback, and guidance when moving forward. Our group has finalized our problem statement: How do we create a harmonious, but welcoming, an environment where we’re preserving wildlife BUT also enhancing human interaction and recreational activities? The tensions within that that we have settled upon and researched extensively are Recreational Purposes vs Wildlife Research OR Public Entity vs Private Entity? After consulting with Nogah she gave us some interesting insights, saying that the fact that we’ve modeled a private entity as an educational model (ie. forest valley) it will probably create a better and much different outcome than we would expect.

It was this particular insight of hers that has lead us to choose public vs private as our main tension when working with Tommy Thompson Park.

After the mini consultation, Libras Inc participated in a design think workshop which, like Bella’s Stimulation, allowed for us to utilize and further grasp the tools revolving around integrative thinking, whilst also adding some other concepts to our toolbox. Not only this, but it also gave us some very cool and helpful tips when it comes to brainstorming and allowing everyone’s voice being heard. Since before, we were having some troubles with discussions and getting everyone to contribute, the methods introduced to us should come in handy - they proved to do us well on Friday!

Following this, we had a very interesting and insightful interview/conversation with the dean of Rotman: Tiff Macklem. As a class we were all asked to ask some questions, whether they be personal or career-related - it didn’t matter. Throughout this conversation, he also gave us 5 lessons in which he has learned over the years, ones that he believes to be key to being successful in life! One key lesson we took away, especially since this is a leadership course, is when he said: “You need to listen before you lead”. Tiff mentioned that great leaders are always people who take the time to get to know someone, therefore enabling you to cater to the person and assign them tasks that they want to do. It is a very valuable lesson that we all need to learn, and we’re getting the insight so early - let’s use it! Thanks, Tiff!

December 1st, 2017 was a very successful day, one in which Libra’s Inc learned a quite a bit about. Although it was an early morning, our team successfully made it through: getting insight from Nogah about Tommy Thompson and also learning some key life lessons from Tiff Macklem!

Moving forward: we can start using what we have learned from Bella’s Stimulation and the workshop today to go ahead and start working and expanding our tension: Private Entity vs Private Entity. Defining the models, evaluating stakeholders and creating our propro chart are just 3 out of a BUNCH of steps that need to be done to get to our final project! All the while, our documentary needs to be made, tweets need to be tweeted, and our final presentation and script need to be constructed. Things are moving quick - stay tuned to see how Libras Inc moves forward!!
